Bamboo Workshop

BAMBOO WORKSHOP Description Visthar, Doddagubbi, Bengaluru · Hosted by Litar Design Station · 12 participantsA three-day workshop on building with bamboo, run at Visthar farm on the edge of Bengaluru with Shruthi Anand of Litar Design Station and bamboo master Ghani of Foto N Man Associates. Twelve participants took part, from a mix of professions rather than architecture alone. Participants began with the material itself — species, selection, and the treatment methods that decide whether a bamboo structure lasts three years or thirty. From there the work moved to design, worked out through sketches and physical models, then on to basic joinery and the roofing options that suit bamboo framing. The final part was entirely hands-on, with participants cutting, jointing and raising work themselves. Location Visthar, Bengaluru Date 09-08-2025 and 10-08-2025 Time 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM No of Seats 13
SHALLOW DOMES

SHALLOW DOMES Description Held over five days at Kolotan School in Barasat, a school building designed by Laurent Fournier, this workshop taught the same natural building techniques that went into the school itself — so participants learned on the very walls and roofs standing around them. The sessions were split across three instructors. Wattle and daub covered the timber and bamboo framework, the daub mix, and the process of packing and finishing the panels. Bamboo work — treatment, cutting, and joinery — was led by Ghani Zaman. Laurent Fournier taught bamboo along with brick shallow domes, walking participants through laying a dome without centering. The group also built and tested a bamboo shallow dome, taking it from setting out the form to loading it and watching how it held. RAMMED EARTH – YERCAUD

RAMMED EARTH – YERCAUD Description Held on the hillside site of Venil Farms in Yercaud, this workshop introduced participants to rammed earth built entirely from soil dug on site. The land offered two distinct soils — a red and a yellow — and the sessions began with understanding them: how each behaved, how much moisture they needed, and how they could be layered to produce the banding that now runs through the finished walls.Participants worked through the full sequence — preparing and testing the mix, setting up formwork, and ramming in courses to the right compaction. Each of them made their own sample block, experimenting with the two colours and the rhythm of the layers. The group was kept small, around eight, so everyone worked hands-on through every stage rather than watching.
